Abilene's National Day of Prayer observance: Fine and dandy unless...

The NDOP is not a violation of the Bill of Rights' "no establishment" promise in and of itself; nor can religious groups or individuals be admonished for anything unlawful just because they carry out their observances and do not care to have various differing religions represented.

Only government entities can violate the "no establishment" clause, so our *legal* issue is not with Pray Big Country (the consortium of local pastors who stage Abilene's Christian-only event), but with Mayor Archibald and City Hall when they play host to such a sectarian/exclusivist observance.

As I've said before (and this is simply to reiterate the point as the date of May 01 draws near), for an official Abilene National Day of Prayer observance *at City Hall* to be lawful under the constitution's religious liberty provision, it must be an event that has welcomed participation by any and every religious position.

If we Atheist and Buddhist (and label-defying freethinker) heathen decide to contact the mayor and request permission to be at City Hall any time before, during or after high noon on May 01 to participate and/or picket, etc., his choices are

a) to welcome the Christians and us with a hearty "y'all come" or
b) to advise the Christians and us that no one will be permitted use of the City Hall venue for the NDOP.

Plans, intentions, ideas, remarks?

in reality,

Noel
