I, Noel, will use the handle SGTex

Howdy

I am Buddhist, a member of Soka Gakkai International and more or less militantly concerned about the issue usually labeled "separation of church and state," though I'm more likely to avoid that expression and speak of "constitutional religious liberty."

I respect persons of any religion but best identify with Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, Pagans, Pantheists and all such progressive, philosophical, cerebral types.  Accordingly, I have for many years (I'm old) been on what some call a "crusade" about the related social/political issues.

I have been debating Bible creationists since I was 9 years old and enjoy that topic very much because of the essentially null and zero likelihood that I could be wrong about it.  (I especially espouse the idea that abiogenesis or molecular evolution is a conceptually robust and high-confidence theory that satisfactorily explains the very origin of life.)

I have nearly as much zeal for battling, ideologically, the whole set of related bigotries -- extreme antiabortionism, (though I might concede that very late term fetuses should be considered babies), the stupid lie that homosexuality is in any sense a sin or abomination, and the insufferably presumptuous proposition that Christian prayer and proselytizing should be countenanced in public school and government venues.

Personally some of my attitude comes of the devastating experience of employment discrimination and persecution that I had at the hands of Hendrick Medical Center in 1997.  My bitterness has mellowed appreciably but ever since those days I am interested in legal activism to counter Christian arrogance and readily consider invoking the American Civil Liberties Union, People for the American Way, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to that end.

With apologies for being a bit verbose here, it is the way I roll, so sue me!

in reality,

Welcome, Noel! It's great to have a Buddhist around for a unique perspective. I have been interested in some of the teachings of Buddha myself, but have yet to delve too deeply. I would be especially interested to learn your take on abiogenesis, as that is an issue I have had difficulty debating with Creationists in the past (I am not very good at Biology / Chemistry). If you are interested and have time, it might be cool to see a post about that in the Town Square -> The Soap Box area of the forum.

It is excellent to have someone present that is experienced in combating prejudice in the community... I am sure there is a lot we could learn from you. I am sad to hear about your Hendrick experience, it is a far too common occurrence around here that the ones preaching about love are actually actively hurtful toward those that disagree with them.

And there's nothing wrong with being a bit verbose here, as this isn't Facebook and people are more likely to actually read posts that are longer than a sentence or two.  Razz

abiogenesis

Post by Gannster on Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:05 pm

More into natural history, and tend to view the broad view on evolution in my readings, and can't claim to know much about abiogenesis. Hope you will attend some of our socials and discuss it with me, as I love zoology but really need to learn more about the theories of how biota got started in the first place.
